New Chinese years
Year ten Wellington!Chinese New Year Festival celebrates ten years in Wellington!

A simple beginning of an afternoon’s entertainment is now Wellington’s 10th Chinese New Year Festival 2011. It’s hard to believe that ten years has passed, and in that time the Festival’s rapid growth has been outstanding. In 2011, we want to mark a decade of celebrations in the cultural events capital of New Zealand so what better way than to explode the night sky with colour, energy and excitement of a fireworks display.

In 2005 and 2007, the Chinese New Year Festival organising body, Asian Events Trust (AET), was the proud recipient of Arts and Culture awards. AET was recognised as a voluntary organisation whose event makes the city a better place and strengthened the community. AET certainly makes the event happen but it’s only possible with the gracious support of the Chinese community and many wonderful volunteers.

And to Wellingtonians and the wider community, AET thanks you for embracing the Chinese culture and helping to grow this Festival to what it has become today, and the way forward for future generations. So with an abundance of double-happiness we celebrate this 10th anniversary whilst welcoming in the Year of the Rabbit.

Celebrated worldwide on Thursday 3 February 2011, this is the first day of the Chinese New Year calendar. In Wellington, the Festival runs over two weekends, 5-13 February 2011, with a showcase of colour and vibrancy. So share in the magic, fun, fashion, fireworks and international entertainment – join in and enjoy this free event, because there’s something for everyone.
